A concealed illegal-mining expedition whose attempt to erase witnesses collapses when PreservationAux launches its own beacon.
GrayCris maintains a large raised habitat only a short distance from the rendezvous plateau, with roughly thirty to forty personnel and enough SecUnits to patrol its base. It believes it can immobilize Murderbot through its governor module, but the free SecUnit instead exposes its immunity and offers a false deal. Murderbot's invented warning that Gurathin is launching GrayCris's beacon panics the group into sending its force away from the habitat.
Blue Leader reveals the underlying scheme while holding Mensah: the blank sectors contain alien remnants that distort mapping. The discovery should bring an archaeological interdict, but GrayCris wants to mine the ruins illegally, so it sabotages and murders competing surveys. The beacon launch exposes the ruse; the faction's SecUnits fire on Murderbot, but GrayCris cannot prevent PreservationAux from reaching the incoming pickup transport.
GrayCris personnel wear color-coded field suits and use a newer large hopper, armed security armor, and a raised jungle-base habitat marked with a square gray logo.
GrayCris is the defeated immediate antagonist, a clandestine exploitation venture that values illicit archaeological profit over two survey teams' lives.
