A dread inverted-tree figure — the form Juice Box became — recreated by Carl as a dahlia effigy symbolizing death and inevitable ruin.
The Unwashed is the strange, dreaded creature that Juice Box transformed into — an upside-down tree with smoke-trailing eyes, known by many names: the Hag, the Stalker, the Beautiful Place, and more, and said to be a personification of the Nothing. For the 'Vengeance' float, Carl has the gremlins build a giant dahlia effigy of it, hidden behind a magenta-and-white triangle until Donut pulls the string and it springs up like a jack-in-the-box beside the white tree, black flowers falling away to reveal red blooms and paint like rivers of blood. To Carl it means more than the Nothing: it is the Inevitable Ruin, a reminder that death comes for everyone regardless of power, and a promise of the coming vengeance he addresses to the whole galaxy.
Whether the Unwashed is 'real' is, he says, irrelevant to what it represents.
A menacing inverted tree, roots or branches splayed upward, eyes trailing smoke, rendered in the effigy with black-then-red dahlias like rivers of blood.
