Story so far
Mordecai is over in Meadowlark's Saferoom working on something with Mistress Tiatha, which is why Carl can't simply call him over when the crying spellbook starts screaming on his counter.
Whatever they are building there arrives at the end of the chapter in the form of armfuls of potion balls and coils and coils of wire, delivered just as Operation: Snake Pit begins.
