Crawler Attorney

Volunteered lawyers

The assigned-counsel system pairing surviving crawlers with lawyers, which hands Donut the worst possible advocate.

Story so far

Every crawler who reaches an exit negotiation is assigned counsel. Lawyers are volunteered for the season - Quasar uses the word with audible quotation marks - and given a handful of clients each; Quasar has three in one day, with Carl the third and final meeting. Attorney-client privilege keeps him from naming the other two, though he confirms both took their deals and neither was anyone in Carl's inner circle.

The assignment is not negotiable. Quasar argued for Princess Donut, having represented her on contract matters before, and even wore his Mongo tie for it; the system gave her Princess Chandra, Esquire instead. That single administrative decision produces the fireworks in Donut's meeting and the revelation that ends Carl's story in this book.

Role

The assigned-counsel process whose one bad pairing delivers the epilogue's final twist.
