mechanic
Single Combat
called out in single combat
Formal duel mechanic used to challenge a title-holder, exploited by cheating to kill Shanty Town's mayor.
Story so far
Juice Box explains how Shanty Town's mayoralty changed hands just before The Ceasefire: the gnoll mayor Theora was called out in single combat and lost. The opponent cheated, of course — basically stabbing Theora in the back. Her disgust at the mechanic is plain, since it lets invaders strip an NPC title through a formality they have no intention of honoring, even while the rules forbid them from actually owning the settlement until the games begin.
Role
A duel challenge that can transfer a settlement's leadership, easily abused by cheating challengers.
Relationships
Theora — Lost her life and the mayoralty to it.
Mayor of Shanty Town — The title contested through this mechanic.
