Operation that kept Tipid alive after leaving the dungeon and buried him in the debt that shaped his life.
The first thing Tipid tells Carl about his life after the dungeon is the surgery he had to get in order to keep himself alive, and the debt he incurred as a result of it. He received none of the protections that The Crawler Project later won — no automatic Syndicate citizenship, no inner-system access, no free healthcare, no guaranteed housing — because those laws did not exist when he was released.
After the surgery he settled in a Crest colony and worked for a waste management company for a very, very long time. It is the arc that puts him aboard a refurbished garbage freighter decades later: the crawler the Syndicate discarded, returning at level 60 with nothing but his own knowledge, to fight the people who did it to him. Mistress Tiatha's bitter aside about how the old guard will be treated on release is aimed squarely at the same reality.
Formative post-release ordeal explaining Tipid's debt, his career, and his reason for returning.
