Emberus's Contemplative Message

Am I Wrong to Hate Him? · Emberus's Confession

A quiet, dread-inducing message in which Emberus warns Carl that killing Hellik may get Carl burned.

Story so far

Immediately after the new worshiper-killing quest, Carl receives a second, confusing and alarming message from Emberus, this time in a far more contemplative voice. Emberus asks whether he is wrong to hate his brother, noting that Hellik has treated with Issitoq on their behalf — an act that in turn allowed peace to be breached. He reveals he is now permitted to kill other princes of Sheol in exchange for information from Amayon about Geyrun, and puzzles openly over what Hellik meant about their mother and sister.

He tells his martyr to be vigilant, then delivers the line Carl cannot stop re-reading: if Carl survives killing Hellik, as Hellik surely deserves, Emberus fears he may turn his rage and grief on Carl for daring to hurt his own kin — and for this, he loves Carl, his beloved but doomed worshiper. He promises the burning will be exquisite. Even on the tenth reading it fills Carl with dread and puts him in an impossible position, tempting him for the first time to take a Smite instead. He remembers Mordecai's warning to stay away from gods.
