When Carl orders Katia Grim to pull him from the castle — hoping (wrongly) it might reverse the crystallization, though really to get Katia out — Ghazi resists in a brief fight and Katia kills him; his body dissolves entirely to sand, and she loots a final note from him explaining the Winding Box's operation.
His removal changes nothing about the castle, and the flood washes it and Lika away. A pathetic figure to the last, he dies clutching at a fantasy, having loosed the deity Psamathe on the world and thrown away the artifact his college needed against Scolopendra.
