Five books deep, Carl and his talking cat Donut clawed down through a deadly televised dungeon that replaced a destroyed Earth, and across this sixth book fought the eighth floor's Faction Wars key-race: forced to witness his father's murder and a half-brother, Asher, he never knew; winning a keymaster-hydra fight; losing his stolen keys and teammates who died rather than fight him; and finally engineering a mad escape by turning the exiled Demon Prince Amayon's world-spanning soul-portal into a lift to the ninth floor, saving an unprecedented ~33,800 crawlers. Along the way he was bound to the monstrous totem Shi Maria via the tattooed "Eye of the Bedlam Bride," learned of the homeless "Residual" aliens, and stripped the faction sponsors of their safety protections. Now, having ridden the portal up to Faction Wars with Donut and Imani, the epilogue pulls back to the wider war. On pre-collapse Earth, the Residual agent Agatha reveals her kind are split into two factions racing to "recruit" the infant enslaved Primal engine that became the dungeon AI; her side means to free the mysterious sleeping Eulogist and would sweep all biological life from the universe to do it, and rival agents are secretly implanting crawlers with a hidden upgrade the mantids' new tech may soon render moot. In orbit, the Syndicate Council refuses Princess Formidable's demand to pull the failsafe and destroy the star, unwilling to sacrifice the galaxy's trapped wealth; instead they back the Valtay "solution" — flooding Faction Wars with over 150,000 mercenaries to exterminate the crawlers, above all Carl and Donut. But aboard the disguised garbage freighter Homecoming Queen, the former crawlers Tipid and Rosetta, working for the enigmatic Doctor Hu, smuggle fifty thousand veteran ex-crawlers in as troopers for the Princess Posse. As they clear on-boarding, they are, at last, coming home to fight.
