Hireable NPC fighters and healers who cost a fortune, can't be looted, and are nearly impossible to fire.
A note added by Crawler Everly in the fifth edition of the guide describes hiring five mercenaries — four from the Merc Guild on the sixth floor of the Desperado Club, and a healer from Club Vanquisher. It was a disaster. They cost 1,500 gold a day each, their bodies cannot be looted, and the contract obliges you to pay their daily rate for the rest of the floor even if they die.
The healer charges per spell cast. Moving them via a personal space is treacherous: if they don't exit with you, they default to the last place they entered and can end up three or four saferooms away. One of Everly's men wandered off and can't be fired, because firing requires bringing them back. Their levels mean next to nothing — a level-40 orc outfights a level-50 dwarf, who is now dead, killed by a chair. Everly calls the whole thing a scam.
Hireable NPC muscle available on the sixth floor, widely regarded as a bad deal.
