Heart of the Tempest

Tempest · Magnetar-class battle cruiser · Trejo's flagship · Laconian battleship · Projector-equipped ship · Bone-pale enemy

The Tempest reveals a seemingly inexhaustible missile brood, defeats suicide attacks, cripples both void cities, and compels the Transport Union's surrender without slowing.

Story so far

The Heart of the Tempest enters the Leuctra trap alone and endures the combined fleet's entire prepared bombardment. Nuclear fire leaves blue light moving beneath its skin but does not stop the ship. Tiny pores open and close along the hull as an impossible number of missiles pour outward, far beyond any conventional magazine remaining after its earlier campaign. Cameron Tur suspects the vessel has recalibrated its regenerative systems and may be growing its own ammunition.

The missiles spread like red capillaries through the fleet. Suicide ships burn toward the flagship at lethal acceleration and all disappear before contact. The Tempest strikes Guard of Passage and hits People's Home with rails severe enough to force a reactor-core drop. A quarter of the combined force becomes disabled or destroyed while the ship remains under thrust toward the inner planets. Its resilience and abundance reveal the battle as the demonstration Duarte intended: humanity may deploy everything it has and still be unable to arrest one Laconian vessel.

Appearance

A colossal bone-pale organic warship with scarred healing skin, fading blue veins after nuclear fire, and pore-like openings releasing swarms of missile plumes while it advances without slowing.

Role

The Tempest wins Laconia's demonstration battle by surviving humanity's maximum force and showing it can generate an offensive response greater than the defenders can absorb.

Relationships

Camina Drummer — Its continued advance and destruction leave Camina Drummer no defensible number of additional lives to spend.
Guard of Passage — A missile penetrates Guard of Passage's defenses and drives the void city to request withdrawal.
People's Home — Its rail strikes cripple People's Home and force the city to drop its damaged reactor core.
Point Leuctra Battle — The Point Leuctra Battle becomes the planned public proof that one Magnetar can defeat the strongest fleet humanity can construct.

  • Laconia's first colossal Magnetar battleship is a self-healing alien-human weapon built to invalidate every rival fleet in existence.
Chapter 12
  • The colossal Tempest enters the slow zone, ignores Medina's warnings, and erases a gunship without any visible weapon discharge.
Chapter 13
  • The Tempest heals through direct rail strikes, destroys Medina's fixed guns, and holds the slow zone motionless while Laconian troops occupy the station.
Chapter 17
  • The Tempest may leave Medina months early after its field projector reveals a way for one Magnetar to defend all thirteen hundred gates.
Chapter 21
  • The Tempest leaves Medina for Sol four hours after Trejo's visit, exploiting Singh's discovery to attack before the coalition can complete its preparations.
Chapter 24
  • The lone Tempest enters Sol ahead of every defense, broadcasts a polite ultimatum, and advances slowly from the remote gate toward the human system.
Chapter 28
  • The Tempest defeats Independence and a dispersed attack group without its field projector, revealing vast concealed armament, predictive accuracy, self-repair, and selective mercy.
Chapter 35
  • The Tempest erases empty Pallas with its field projector and apparently triggers lost consciousness, boiling vacuum, and collapsed entanglement across the entire Sol system.
Chapter 43
  • The Tempest absorbs a fleet's rails, torpedoes, atmosphere loss, and a nuclear fireball, then resumes its inner-system course while destroying surrounding ships.
Chapter 46
  • The Tempest reveals a seemingly inexhaustible missile brood, defeats suicide attacks, cripples both void cities, and compels the Transport Union's surrender without slowing.
