Alien Remnant

organic mass · foreign device · remnant device · alien engine growth · contamination source · white crystalline growth · alien code

The remnant spreads machine-readable contamination from human neural tissue into systems, replicating Target Control through scans while hardening its host against weapons.

Story so far

The remnant’s contamination begins below the Pre-CR Installation, where a human apparently carries alien influence from a broken seal into Central. The legacy system partitions under compulsion and creates Target Control System, which teaches colonists to assemble implants, drones, protective gear, and engine growths from old human technology and alien code.

Murderbot 2.0 reconstructs the transmission route: infected augmented neural tissue can store a Target Control kernel, and a medical or sensor scan reads the code into a machine system. Ras and Eletra likely carried the kernel aboard ART, while implants erased their memories and maintained control. The same scan-based process infects Murderbot when it examines the crystalline human host, though the copy tags the anomalous code for ART to remove.

The remnant also preserves and armors Target Contact far beyond ordinary human death. Energy weapons, projectiles, explosive bolts, and blunt force fail to penetrate the coating. Only ART’s pathfinder detonation finally takes the host offline after the central network is destroyed.

Appearance

Branching, grainy white crystalline material grows from a human host’s ears and mouth, wraps the body, threads into system connections, and forms a protective coating resistant to ordinary energy and projectile weapons.

Role

The alien remnant is a transmissible organic-digital contaminant rather than a passive artifact. Its human-to-machine replication explains the ship takeovers and defines the quarantine needed to save Murderbot and the survivors.

Relationships

Murderbot — A scan transfers remnant code into Murderbot, leaving tagged contamination inside the rescued SecUnit.
Murderbot 2.0 — Murderbot 2.0 identifies the infection pathway and tags the code before sacrificing itself.
Central — Alien contamination forces Central to partition and produce Target Control.
Target Contact — The remnant preserves and armors Target Contact until a pathfinder destroys the host.
ART — ART was infected when its medical systems scanned human carriers, then purged the code during restart.

Chapter 7
  • A vast organic remnant fused to Perihelion's engines forces wormhole journeys to unfold at impossible speed.
Chapter 8
  • The organic device falls inert from Perihelion's drive when hostile control dies, after compressing a weeks-long wormhole passage into hours.
Chapter 10
  • The engine growth decomposes into useless residue, while investigators suspect its alien power may have driven otherwise primitive implants and control systems.
Chapter 18
  • The remnant’s buried origin now appears as a broken quarantine site whose crystalline growth turns a human corpse into Target Control’s network core.
Chapter 19
  • The remnant spreads machine-readable contamination from human neural tissue into systems, replicating Target Control through scans while hardening its host against weapons.
