character

Murderbot

SecUnit · Security Unit · bot/human construct · security consultant · Eden · academic-model SecUnit · Perihelion’s SecUnit · Me Version 1.0

Repaired and decontaminated, Murderbot accepts that its copy was a person and chooses a trial mission with ART without surrendering Preservation.

Story so far

Murderbot reaches ART infected, riddled with projectiles, and unable to use Medical’s connected scanners. ART’s crew builds a feed-isolated emergency treatment around it, repairing organic tissue by hand while ART entertains the SecUnit through a sealed interface. The rescued crew learns that Murderbot is the rogue behind the GrayCris news stories, and the Preservation and university groups agree to keep one another’s secrets.

ART moves Murderbot’s active consciousness into an isolation box, stays with it, and deletes the tagged alien code. Murderbot finally acknowledges that Murderbot 2.0 was a person whose sacrifice saved everyone, without regretting the deployment. Returned to its repaired body at ninety-eight-percent reliability, it learns that ART armed pathfinders and brought humans, a transport, and newly free Three together to rescue it—an inversion of the construct purpose that assumes SecUnits will be abandoned. Murderbot gives Three more of its HelpMe archive and advises that terrifying freedom is still safer than a governor module.

When Mensah arrives with Preservation, Murderbot authenticates her through their private stand-down code and confirms that it wants both continued belonging in Preservation and more time with ART. Mensah offers return and visits rather than possession. Murderbot accepts the idea of a temporary mission with ART’s crew as a way to test a longer association, then settles onto ART’s familiar control deck to share media and plan what Three might need.

Appearance

A lean, androgynous human-derived SecUnit with generic features, fine eyebrows, short dark hair, and a neck data port, fully repaired and dressed again in clean, recycler-restored dark-blue security clothing and sturdy boots.

Role

Murderbot ends the crisis as survivor, mentor, and person with more than one home. Choosing ART’s mission becomes an expansion of belonging rather than another escape from ownership.

Relationships

ART — Murderbot recognizes ART as a close friend and chooses a trial mission that may become a longer partnership.
Mensah — Mensah assures Murderbot that joining ART need not end its place in Preservation or their relationship.
Three — Murderbot tells Three that freedom and choice are terrifying but preferable, then shares the completed HelpMe story.
Murderbot 2.0 — Murderbot accepts Murderbot 2.0 as a distinct person whose chosen death defeated Target Control.
Amena — Amena helps Murderbot interpret ART’s invitation as a cautious step toward joining a family and asks what it actually wants.
