The protomolecule, an alien artifact recovered years ago, has dragged humanity through catastrophe after catastrophe across Earth, Mars, and the Belt, and finally torn open a network of ring gates to more than a thousand new worlds. James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been at the center of every crisis, most recently on the contested colony world of Ilus beyond the rings, and now a land rush to those worlds is reshaping the solar system while Earth, Mars, and the Outer Planets Alliance jockey for control. Against that backdrop, a Belter strike team creeps across the Martian military shipyard on Callisto, moon of Jupiter. Their young commander, fifteen-year-old Filip Inaros, times the assault with cold precision: a decoy loader blinds the meteor defenses while precisely aimed tungsten slugs, dropped from orbit months earlier at brutal speed, obliterate the Martian marines and the two warships overhead in an instant. Filip's team loots the warehouse for the prize that justifies everything: canisters of High Density Resonance Coating, the stealth composite that lets Martian warships vanish from sensors. He clears a fouled evacuation scaffold by venting his own suit's air through a self-inflicted wound, then coldly abandons two of his men, Chuchu and Andrew, when their extraction proves impossible, listening to Andrew's screams as he launches. The team rockets clear just as a second kinetic strike flattens the whole facility, and the ship Pella comes to gather its raiders. Filip feels not fear at the deaths under his first command but pride, pride rooted in who his father is and what this theft is leading toward. As the older Miral wishes him a happy fifteenth birthday, it is clear this quiet, ruthless boy is only the leading edge of something much larger moving in the dark of the Belt.
