character

Matteo

The gentle Pink Rose who taught Darrow Aureate culture, found in Quicksilver's bed and shattered by Sevro before Darrow recognizes him.

Story so far

Matteo, the beautiful, fragile Pink Rose of the Garden who taught the boy Darrow Aureate culture, manners, and dead languages before the Institute, is found asleep in Quicksilver's bedroom during the raid—apparently the trillionaire's paramour. Before Darrow recognizes him, Sevro tortures and then, when Matteo lunges for a datapad, shatters his fragile jaw, knocking him unconscious with possible spinal or brain trauma. Darrow, stricken, throws Sevro off and cradles his old teacher.

The find raises alarming questions: has Matteo defected to Quicksilver, or was he placed there on Ares's business? Either way Sevro fears the Sons—and Tinos—may be compromised. He is stowed by the Howlers as they push deeper into the tower.

Appearance

A gentle, fragile Pink with delicate angular features, a long nose, rose-quartz eyes, and dark honey skin; dusky curls with a faint blue sheen, flower-embellished pink Sigils, a slender silver band on his ring finger; here bloodied, jaw shattered, unconscious.

Role

Darrow's former tutor, a Pink Rose entangled with Quicksilver; a wounded link between the Reaper's past and the mystery of the trillionaire's loyalties.

Relationships

Darrow — His former pupil, who taught him Aureate culture and now anguishes over the harm done to him.
Quicksilver — The trillionaire in whose bed he is found—paramour, agent, or captive, his loyalty unknown.
Sevro — The Son who tortures and gravely wounds him before Darrow can intervene.
Theodora — A fellow Pink Rose of the Garden, of the same costly and refined pedigree.
