Phoebe Bug

Phoebe infection · brown stuff

The unnamed biological horror recorded by Julie Mao as a Phoebe-derived infection that spreads through dark fluid, feeds on radiation, and reshapes its host.

Story so far

The term 'Phoebe bug' comes from Julie Mao's final notes, recovered from the terminal in her Eros room. Julie records that she became infected on a shuttle after encountering brown material connected to Phoebe, then slept for three weeks, became feverish and ravenous, and began leaking the same substance. She repeatedly warns anyone reading the notes not to touch it, not to feed it radiation, and to burn her body.

The evidence in the room makes the warning concrete. Julie's death involved black tendrils, tubes climbing the walls, bony spurs, and deep brown fluid, not the ordinary decay or 'goo' she feared. James Holden, Naomi Nagata, Miller, Alex, and Amos Burton can only speculate that it may be a bioweapon connected to a science station on Phoebe and to an unknown ship that supplied Julie's shuttle. Its origin, means of transmission, and connection to the attacks on the Canterbury and Donnager remain unknown.

Appearance

The phenomenon appears as dark brown or black fluid, branching tendrils, invasive tube-like growths, and dramatic changes to an infected human body. Julie's notes say it is anaerobic and reacts to radiation, but the crew has not verified those claims.

Role

The Phoebe bug is the first named clue to the biological force that killed and transformed Julie Mao.

Relationships

Julie Mao — Julie Mao records her infection and its warnings in the notes recovered after her death.
Phoebe — The infection is called the Phoebe bug because Julie's notes connect it to Phoebe, though the exact origin is not yet established.
James Holden — Holden treats the phenomenon as a possible bioweapon and makes its trail the Rocinante's next lead.
Miller — Miller connects the name to an inner-planets science station on Phoebe that was reportedly hit with many deaths.
