Julie Mao

Juliette Andromeda Mao · Julie · Lionel Polanski

The protomolecule-transformed survivor awakened within Eros, who accepts Miller's plea to turn the station away from Earth and toward Venus.

Story so far

Following the logic of the old Eros operation, Miller finds Julie Mao in the station's backup environmental-control facility, where Protogen originally kept her remade body contained. She lies embedded in dark filaments that spill from her spine and replace her legs, her altered eyes lit blue like the station's drifting motes. Yet she breathes, speaks, is frightened, and recognizes only fragments of the racing dream that has carried Eros toward home.

Miller makes her hold the bomb's dead-man switch and tells her that she is driving the station. Julie can feel the enormous alien want behind her own mind, but understands that taking Eros to Earth would consume humanity as it consumed her. When he asks for Venus instead, she chooses it despite her fear. Her decision changes Eros's course from invasion to self-exile.

Appearance

Julie is a young dark-haired woman with a wide jaw and slightly irregular nose, transformed from the waist down into a vast nest of dark protomolecule filaments. Her altered eyes have red-and-black patterned sclera and luminous blue irises; this is a terminal transformation, not her canonical portrait look.

Role

Julie is the conscious human will inside Eros, able to redirect the alien machine only by accepting a fate she cannot fully understand.

Relationships

Miller — Miller finds Julie, gives her the dead-man's switch, and persuades her that steering toward Venus will save Earth.
Eros — Julie Mao can feel Eros's vast alien directive but makes the human choice to redirect its body away from Earth.
Protomolecule — The Protomolecule has remade Julie's body and used her mind as part of its improvised Eros system without wholly erasing her agency.
