Story so far
When Miller says that Julie Mao is alive within Eros, James Holden initially refuses to stop the incoming nuclear barrage. The station remains a possible extinction-level threat, and no diagnosis can prove Miller's perception sane. But Miller's reconstruction of the protomolecule as an ancient system improvising around a human brain persuades Holden that Julie may be steering Eros home without understanding what its arrival would do.
Holden agrees to delay, not cancel, the strike. With Naomi Nagata he arranges a transponder relay that bends the missiles into a long arc and tricks UNN control into losing midcourse authority. Fred Johnson accepts only after Holden offers the secure protomolecule sample and research notes as payment. Holden tells Miller to aim Julie at Venus; he has chosen a narrow chance at dialogue over the certainty of immediate annihilation.
Appearance
Holden is a tall, broad-shouldered pale-skinned Earther with brown hair, an open expressive face, and a recently crooked nose. He looks exhausted and unwashed after the pursuit but remains composed at the operations console.
Role
Holden accepts responsibility for a perilous delay because he believes saving Earth need not require refusing the last possible human appeal to Eros.
Relationships
Miller — Holden trusts Miller's investigative judgment enough to delay the nuclear strike, while requiring him to destroy Julie if he cannot reach her.
Naomi Nagata — Naomi Nagata designs the missile detour that gives Miller time without abandoning the ability to strike Eros.
Fred Johnson — Holden trades Fred the protomolecule sample and notes for cooperation in delaying the missiles.
Julie Mao — Holden offers Julie Mao Venus as a destination if Miller can persuade her to redirect Eros.
