character

Fitchner

Ares · Proctor Mars · the Rage Knight · Bronzie

Ares, leader of the Sons of Ares, murdered and beheaded—his head delivered to Darrow in the Triumph Mask box.

Story so far

Fitchner—Ares, leader of the Sons of Ares and Sevro's father—is dead. Absent from Darrow's Triumph despite promising to attend, he was hunted down and killed by the Sovereign's conspiracy. At the Mask presentation, Roque tilts the ivory box toward Darrow's poisoned eyes to reveal Fitchner's severed head staring back, mouth stuffed with grapes in cruel echo of the murder that founded House Augustus.

The low-born Gold who lost his Red wife Bryn to the Society's machinery, rose to Rage Knight, and hid at the Sovereign's side to work her destruction—the one man who lifted Darrow from grief and gave the rebellion its hope—has been butchered, leaving the cause leaderless and Darrow certain they are undone.
