character

Murderbot

SecUnit · Rin · Consultant Rin · Eden · Jian · Kiran · rogue unit · the SecUnit

The rogue SecUnit, rebuilt and at rest on Preservation, choosing—for now—to stay and figure out what it wants.

Story so far

After its catastrophic failure fighting the Attacker, Murderbot rebuilds its shattered memory aboard the ancient refugee ship that became Preservation's transit station, its human neural tissue slowly reassembling the fragments—jump-started, tellingly, by an intact archive of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. On Preservation no one but the survey team knows it is a SecUnit; it is passed off as an injured augmented person and legal refugee. Dr. Mensah offers it a home, a station hotel with a big display surface, and—crucially—time, admitting she was wrong to think it needed extensive help to pass among humans.

Ratthi and Gurathin rig it a private camera network; Pin-Lee, now its legal counsel, slips it fresh IDs and currency 'so you know we're serious, that you're not some kind of prisoner or pet.' Arada and Overse offer it a survey job outside the Corporation Rim. Rebuilt to full cognition, Murderbot wanders the station, buys transport passage, and chooses not to board—drifting instead to Mensah's office, where it meets her small daughter and shows her the rescue. Mensah lays out real options: a hiring offer from GoodNightLander Independent that considers its citizenship 'immaterial,' and Dr. Bharadwaj's proposal to make its story a documentary for the construct-citizenship movement.

Still unsure what it wants, Murderbot decides it at least has a place to be while it works that out.

Appearance

A lean, androgynous human-derived construct with a generic human face, thickened longer head hair, and a healed knee, now rebuilt to full cognition, dressed again in its dark blue-and-black jacket and boots, moving easily among humans as an augmented person.

Role

Protagonist and narrator; a free construct that ends the book choosing to remain among people who treat it as a person.

Relationships

Dr. Mensah — Offers it a home, options, and time without ownership; Murderbot half-plans to leave but chooses to stay near her.
Pin-Lee — Its legal counsel, who gifts it illegal IDs and currency to prove it is neither prisoner nor pet.
Arada — Invites it on a bond-free survey outside the Corporation Rim, wanting it to keep the team from getting killed.
GoodNightLander Independent — Offers to hire it—as the person who saved Don Abene's team—regardless of what it is.
