Shirly

Shirly, Mechanical’s chief and Marck’s widow, is reported dead after sealing the evacuation tunnel; Courtnee has assumed the leadership she left vacant.

Story so far

A young, spirited second-shift foreman, Shirly worked beside Juliette on the generator and kept her informed after she left Mechanical. She was married to Marck and helped care for the reclusive Walker. She joined Deagan Knox’s delegation to Supply and later carried a rifle in the second wave, but was ordered to help the farmers restore power and missed the attack itself. Reunited with an injured Marck during the retreat, she helped him down toward Mechanical and reached back for him as others forced her through the barricade. He died before he could follow.

Grieving and questioning the rebellion’s cost, Shirly fed Walker, helped modify his radio, and concluded that its voices came from other silos. She salvaged the equipment during a retreat, helped rebuild the listening station in the generator control room, and heard Juliette’s voice. Once convinced the transmission was live, she fetched blasting transmitters through the fighting despite being injured on her return. She told Juliette about defenders diverting generator exhaust into IT’s vents, feared that the attackers would not stop, and held Courtnee as their defense was overwhelmed.

After the fighting, Shirly became Chief of Mechanical and oversaw recovery while still grieving Marck. She opposed Juliette’s excavation, worried about staffing and breaching the silo’s seal, and devised precautions including charges to close the tunnel against bad air. When a mob overran Mechanical’s gates, she threatened to shut the operation down. During evacuation she directed people through a narrow passage beside the digger’s power plant. She refused Juliette’s attempt to leave her in charge, struck her unconscious, and set off charges whose placement had been intended to protect her home silo from Silo 17’s air. Juliette reported her dead; the sacrifice brought down the tunnel ceiling completely. Courtnee has now taken over the mechanics’ leadership.
