Walker

Walk · Walter

Walker is an elderly electrician whose suit-material substitution and radio work helped Juliette survive; he has now removed his own suit after its oxygen ran out.

Story so far

Walker trained shadows including Scottie and taught Juliette practical electrical work, yet became so withdrawn that he remained in his room for more than forty years. After Scottie's death, he regretted encouraging the younger man to leave for a new job and suspected IT when Juliette described her concerns. His examination of the cleaning equipment led him to conclude that its heat tape had been engineered to fail. Calling in favors with Supply, he arranged for Mechanical's best materials to replace those requested for Juliette's suit. Hearing that she had refused to clean prompted him to leave his room despite his fear, and he explained the substitution to the gathering in Mechanical.

As the uprising brought fighting, Walker blamed himself for the resulting deaths and sank into despair. Working with Shirly, he modified a radio, built stronger antennas and an amplifier, and began exploring signals beyond his silo's usual communications. A blast injured his hip and forced him to abandon the workshop with components packed in a parts tub. In the generator control room, he rebuilt the receiver and wept when he heard Juliette's voice. He then adapted blasting-cap transmitters to answer her. Their contact confirmed that she was alive, and he let Shirly speak with her even as the defenders were being overwhelmed.

Walker continued building communications equipment afterward, making a portable radio for use between silos and warning that reception would deteriorate as the tunnel deepened. When Solo visited, he recognized the man from earlier conversations and connected him to Juliette. Later, he found no apparent fault in a modified radio that had lost contact and tried again to reach Lukas at her request. He escaped through the dig with the evacuation crowd and settled to work in the back of the digger, where the confined space and steady power felt familiar. He offered to build a charger for Juliette's depleted radio and worked on pumps and apparent mining detonators for Courtnee. Mechanics later wanted to persuade him to join the departure. He initially refused to leave his suit, but hurriedly removed it when its oxygen ran out.
