Dungeon Crawler Carl · the whole book

Been away from the book? Here's where things stand — and nothing past your current chapter.
Previously

When you last left off, Earth had been hollowed into an eighteen-level World Dungeon, and survival meant descending ever deeper while an alien audience watched it all as entertainment. Carl, the former Coast Guard tech caught outside in his boxers and Crocs, was still clawing forward at level twelve beside Donut, his ex-girlfriend's pampered show cat turned foul-mouthed, camera-loving crawler. Their unlikely mentor, the rat-like guild keeper Mordecai, kept feeding them hard truths about what lay ahead.

The book so far

Recently the pair tore through the kobold boss chamber, where Carl freed the captive danger dingoes with simple kindness and finally crushed the rage-mad gerbil Ralph. From the menagerie reward room, Donut claimed a new pet: Mongo, a stubborn pink-feathered Mongoliensis, essentially a velociraptor, who bit everyone in reach but bonded with her after she saved him from an acid-spitting hornet. Carl also discovered he'd absorbed illegal Valtay tech from old Agatha's shopping cart, and grew wary of her.

Where things stand

Off the dungeon floor, the viral "Pork Boy" video humiliating Prince Maestro had the Skull Empire seething, with King Rust now parked in Earth's orbit. Carl, defiant, stood by his challenge of single combat. Now, after a turn on Odette's talk show, he and Donut stand at the threshold of the all-important third floor, where they must finally choose a class and race.

Who matters now

Recent & key events

Pork Boy Snick — The Pork Boy Snick is a viral comedic video focused on Prince Maestro that exaggerates Carl's proportions, which Carl insists is faked. Peta Enthusiast — An achievement awarded to Carl for removing an aggravated non-sapient enemy's hostility so it fought other enemies to his benefit. Stairwell Disintegration Exploit — Effective immediately, non-sapient mobs reaching a stairwell will no longer be disintegrated, closing the rule Carl exploited on the recap. Faction Wars — The Squim Conglomerate plays Battle Royale instead, which has no Faction Wars or Celestial Ascendancy segment. Death Watch Extreme — 'Death Watch Extreme!' is the escalated version where contestants are dropped back into their frozen death scene to fight for survival. Floor Collapse — The first floor's collapse killed a little more than 10 million people, and the timer to the second floor's collapse was set to six days rather than the expected ten.
