character

Renfield

R. M. Renfield · Mr. Renfield · the zoöphagous patient

Dying, Renfield confesses that he invited Dracula in, then resisted him to protect Mina and paid for that redemption with his life.

Story so far

Van Helsing relieves pressure on Renfield's shattered brain long enough for confession. Dracula tempted him at the window with rats and promised lives until Renfield worshipped and invited him inside Seward's Asylum.

Seeing Mina Harker grow pale, Renfield understood the Master was drinking her blood. He grappled with Count Dracula to protect her, but the vampire's burning eyes dissolved his strength and Dracula flung him violently to the floor. Renfield gives the hunters the warning that sends them upstairs, then dies after choosing resistance over promised life.

Appearance

A powerfully built man of fifty-nine as he looked alive, with intense intelligent eyes and a volatile face; his final injuries are not used as his canonical likeness.

Role

Renfield becomes a redeemed witness whose rejected bargain and final resistance reveal Dracula's entry, target, and method in time for the hunters to intervene.

Relationships

Mina Harker — Concern for Mina Harker moves him to resist the Master and spend his life trying to save hers.
Count Dracula — He first invites and worships Count Dracula, then physically defies him and is killed.
