Jacek reaches his imprisoned father by the new radio link — proud of his working terminal, urging Basia to blow up the RCE ship, agreeing to look after his mother.
With the radio contact Holden arranged, Jacek Merton calls his father Basia Merton aboard the Rocinante. A boy's excitement bubbles through the grief — his hand terminal works again (talks only to the ship), and someday they'll be on the network like all of Sol. But the anger surfaces too: he tells his father he should fly the warship and 'blow up the RCE ship,' and asks pointedly if he's in jail.
He reports that his mother Lucia is sad, that he's playing more soccer (fullback, though he wants to be a striker), and — when Basia charges him to make sure Lucia sleeps and stops overworking now that Felcia's gone — agrees, though his tone is hard to read. He signs off 'See you, Pop,' cutting the line before his father can say he loves him.
A young boy, Basia and Lucia's son; heard only as a bright young voice over the radio, grief and anger mixed under a child's chatter about soccer and terminals.
The Mertons' young son; the child left behind, reaching for his father across orbit and carrying more of the family than a boy should.
