The seventeenth-edition Cookbook author whose two sentences on indestructible NPCs are worth five hundred lives.
Azin wrote the seventeenth edition of The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, and the chapter on NPCs is the part Carl needed. The passage is short and entirely practical: some NPCs are indestructible, you can kill them and they regenerate in a matter of minutes, and if you find one it means they have something on them or they know something important — big important. The trick, Azin adds, is finding out what that is.
It is an observation with no hedging and no sentiment, and it is what allows Carl to hear Growler Gary's drunken account of having his throat torn out and surviving and immediately reclassify him from a sad bartender into a lock with a hidden key. Drakea later annotated the same passage in the twenty-second edition with an account of a church NPC who could not be dragged from his building. Azin's own identity, race and season go unmentioned; like most of the book's contributors, the only trace left is a name and a paragraph that outlives them.
Never seen; known only as a name attached to seventeenth-edition text.
