Sinopia worked exactly as designed — both carts arrived, and its people walked out into a trainyard alive.
The first line swept is also the first success confirmed. The abyss cart appeared at the pit end still blasting "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John, and the trainyard cart arrived only minutes later — which is what told Carl that the carts sometimes slow when they hit something big, letting the follower catch up. On Sinopia the two carts stayed just far enough apart to both survive; on the Mindaro Line they did not.
The abyss gate at Sinopia's end did not line up with the rapid-response cart's own trainyard track, so the crawlers who went through never saw the cart again. That turned out not to matter. They walked out of the yard and joined the defenders at the nearest instance of Station 36 — between Sinopia and the Grullo Line, eight hundred people, all of them delivered to a stairwell station. "That was the best I could do for them."
The runaway cart ended its own run at Trainyard M, where the switching stations parked it in a dead-end holding siding, it flipped, threw the yard's awning system into The Abyss and shut its own portal off — still identifiable by the Olivia Newton-John blaring out of it as it arrived.
Unseen by the party from end to end. Known by its sound: a cart's music receding far below the switching station, and a song still playing in a trainyard hundreds of miles away.
The proven rescue line — first launched, first confirmed, and half of the eight hundred crawlers brought to a stairwell station.
