Fire Brandy

Brandy

Boiler demon who remembers her stolen children and chooses to die with the train rather than be reused.

Story so far

Fire Brandy powered the boiler of The Nightmare Express and had been freed by Carl's crew, but when Carl offered to get her and her babies out before the detonation run, she refused. Talking with Tizquick had made her remember: this was not her first boiler. She had burned in the engine of a massive boat and in a castle's heating system before, each time thinking it was just a job to earn money for her children. Each time she was given one, two, or — this time — three babies. She had secretly named every one of them, against custom, and none had ever come back to her. She always did.

She told Carl plainly that she and the dwarf were aware they would die, and that they had decided to stay: they would never use her like this again. As Carl stepped off the train she said she finally understood what this place was, and asked him to help them — that even though he had his own people to save, they should not be enemies in this. Carl agreed. The train whistled twice, backed to the edge of the trainyard and ran for the portal; Carl reflected afterward that Fire Brandy had killed herself to save herself from losing more children.
