Herot

Crawler Herot

The 16th-edition Cookbook author whose 'Worn Path Method' theorizes NPCs are the dungeon's weak link — breakable, cruelly, by breaking the fourth wall.

Story so far

Herot is the author of the 16th edition of The-Dungeon-Anarchists-Cookbook, remembered for a long essay on the nature of NPCs that Carl begins reading as Madison's false memories unravel. Her 'Worn Path Method' holds that NPCs are the dungeon's weakest link — biological, not autonomous — so quests and puzzles crack open faster when a crawler deliberately breaks the fourth wall: ask NPCs questions and challenge them when they don't know something they should ('be kind but firm'). She calls jolting them out of their scripted reverie cruel but necessary for survival.

The theory directly informs how Carl handles Madison, Vernon, and Brandy, deepening his unease about the thin, tragic personhood the system grants its NPCs.

Appearance

Unknown; a past crawler-author (referred to as 'she'), not physically described.
