Vermillion Key

the Vermillion key · the engine key

The engine key looted from Hekla's corpse — the only way to detach the engine car and the only lock the Daughters can't beat.

Story so far

Every engine car on the Iron Tangle has a key, and Hekla held the Vermillion Line train's. The party had blocked the engine doors so they would close but not lock, avoiding the need for a key at all — but detaching the car requires one, so when the fight breaks out Carl's first order is for Katia Grim to loot the key, because only the crawler who made the kill can loot the corpse.

She gets it, and shrugs that it hardly matters now. Carl disagrees on two counts: they need it to detach the engine at Station 75 and hand the train to Li Jun, and just as importantly they do not want the other Brynhild's Daughters having it. With the door kicked free of its block and locked, and the key in Katia's inventory, the Daughters can hammer on it as long as they like — from experience, Carl knows nobody gets into an engine car without a key.

Appearance

An engine key, never described in detail, looted from a severed torso in a flooded cab.

Role

The item that lets the party keep the engine, lock out the Daughters, and split the train at station 75.

Relationships

Katia Grim — She looted it from Hekla because only the killer may loot the corpse.
Brynhild's Daughters — Denying it to them is half its value; they cannot force an engine door without one.
Station 75 — Where the key will be used to detach the engine and hand the train off.
