Captain Samuels

Samuels · Christina Huang Samuels

Facing an unwinnable Medina battle, Samuels surrenders to Holden to save civilians and her people while publicly rejecting inner-planet rule.

Story so far

Christina Huang Samuels is the Free Navy captain administering Medina Station, a capable official who previously made the station's security crackdown appear controlled and necessary. She governs in the shadow of Rosenfeld's patronage, Laconian involvement, and the armed rail-gun network that once made the station's defenses formidable.

The coalition's assault changes the balance when Bobbie Draper disables the rail guns and captures the Martian personnel defending them. As the Roci and Giambattista occupy the slow zone with enough armed boats to begin a destructive boarding action, James Holden offers surrender and humane treatment. Samuels answers in an open broadcast from Medina's float-side command room, a setting marked by familiar religious imagery.

She accepts the terms only on guarantees for her people and civilian residents, demands the right to record the boarding, and frames her choice as necessity rather than political surrender. Her final declaration maintains that the Free Navy is the Belt's military arm and that she will oppose inner-planet tyranny and exploitation. In choosing not to sacrifice Medina to a hopeless defense, she preserves lives while refusing to let Holden's victory erase the grievance that made the Free Navy possible.

Appearance

An adult Belter woman with a guarded authoritative demeanor, wearing a formal Free Navy command uniform; she speaks from a freefall command room with religious images on the wall behind her.
