Havana

Ghost-filled Havana of an earlier floor, the memory Larracos's living reality forces Carl to confront.

Story so far

Looking out over Larracos, Carl is struck by how clean everything looks and yet how lived-in. Havana had felt like that too, he thinks, but the feeling there had been much eerier, because all the people living in it were ghosts. They were already dead. The city was already destroyed. The toll was real.

Then a small draconian boy rushes past carrying a bundle of twine, and Carl thinks: this is real, too. It's just as real as Havana. He notes that this is not a welcome thought, especially in the context of what the crawlers have already done to this place and these people — the comparison converting his awe at the city into guilt before the war has even begun.

Role

The earlier ruined city whose ghosts frame Carl's guilt about Larracos.
