Sturnus

Volteeg's birth race: a small caged singing bird that perched on its owner's shoulder.

Story so far

Sturnus is Volteeg's birth race, listed on his crawler record beneath his adopted Gargoyle form. As a Sturnus he lived in a cage kept clean by Mistress Henspar, perched on her shoulder to market, bit a shopkeeper's finger over an offered berry, hid beneath her jacket while she smuggled berries up to him, and sang whenever he felt loved — springing tears down her cheeks.

The Pet Biscuit gave him some intelligence and the ability to speak but little else; the real transformation came with the race change on the third floor, which cost him his song forever. His rare dreams as a gargoyle are still Sturnus dreams: berries, fire, the warmth of the hearth, back when it was all so simple.

Appearance

A small perching bird, small enough to ride a shoulder or hide beneath a jacket, capable of whistling melody and peeping in excitement.

Role

The bird race Volteeg was born into and mourns having traded away.

Relationships

Volteeg — His birth race, abandoned for gargoyle on the third floor
Mistress Henspar — Kept him as a Sturnus pet and hid him under her jacket
Pet Biscuit — Granted him speech and thought while still a Sturnus
