Gargoyle former-crawler pet turned Weeper tank commander who suicide-bombs the Bloc force to kill Hortense.
Volteeg began the crawl as Mistress Henspar's caged singing bird, a Sturnus who bit a shopkeeper for a berry and was forgiven and hidden in her jacket, singing to her afterward because she loved him. A pet biscuit gave him speech and dim intelligence, and on the third floor he chose to become a Gargoyle — a race that cannot sing — a trade he calls the worst decision of his life, because you cannot unknow the universe any more than you can unbite a shopkeeper. Mistress Henspar died on the seventh floor to Scags while he stood over her screaming, and after that came only rage. The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook reached him through the hidden words on a useless prayer cast projection, but he only noticed the messages during the ninth floor, and made his one and only entry at its very end, as the The Orcs armies roared in victory. He took a tenth-floor deal as an unprotected NPC guard at the Rampart Guild for 26 seasons and survived without ever fighting a crawler.
Outside the dungeon his gargoyle powers stopped working, so the Outreach Guild placed him in security on the Auditor General's Compliance Barge, where he and the other One-Offs watched the The Operatic Collective bomb settlements over unpaid mortgages. Now back on the surface as Weeper Commander for the Operatic Collective, he escaped the The Bone Clan purge of former crawlers because Porthus had a The Pacifist Network mole alter his designation to read as a former indentured — and because he'd entered as a pet. Porthus told him it was not too late to do something. Positioned east of center in the Bloc force, Volteeg watches Rosetta behead King Rust, exploits the Weeper Tank fire-control flaw to fill his tank with dozens of humming energy balls, plays Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at full volume, sings along in a voice like dragging rocks, whispers "Show me Mistress Henspar," and drives a Blitz Stick into the ball on his lap — killing over 10,000 soldiers including Warlord Hortense Leadership Unit and eliminating Team Two from Faction Wars.
A gargoyle with an ugly, misshapen head roughly the size of a Weeper energy ball, stone-skinned and heavy-set, needing a brace to stand upright in gravity heavier than half his home planet's. His voice grates like rocks dragged against one another.
Weeper Commander for the Operatic Collective and secret seventh-edition cookbook author who martyrs himself to destroy the Bloc's advance force.
