As Carl catalogues the moments that can never be taken back — the ones The Inevitable Ruin would call lost causes — he thinks of himself sitting in that gas station next to Lightning Lou, pressing a button that would change everything.
The memory sits alongside Donut on the Nest Tower parapet and Katia killing Astrid as Carl's proof that irrevocable moments happen, immediately followed by his insistence that they do not make anything hopeless.
