Stacked temporary buffs, illusions, and ear protection shielding the assault, all strippable by one diffusion spell.
The crawler charge runs under a thick layer of war protections: illusions concealing the formations (including tank formations that don't really exist), stacking buffs, and ear protection against the Dazzlers. They are what keeps Carl alive when a pulse light sparks against his shield edge — a hit that would have taken half his head off if he hadn't been so wrapped in protection.
A single enemy magic diffusion spell cancels the lot: "You've been Deshrouded. Your War Protections are gone! Like, all of them!" Illusions vanish, smoke dissipates, and ear protection snaps off while the Dazzlers keep blaring. They restack only gradually — Donut's ear protection returns first, then Mongo's, then illusions reappear and buffs and debuffs churn back onto Carl's list.
The layered defensive buff system the crawler assault depends on and briefly loses.
