The Silo

Silo 18 · Silo Eighteen

Silo Eighteen, once home to thousands, has been shut down; Juliette and other former residents now live in the village.

Story so far

The Silo, also known as Silo Eighteen or Silo 18, was a buried cylindrical home divided into three sections of forty-eight floors. Apartments, workshops, hydroponic gardens and purification rooms supported thousands whose daily journeys followed its staircase. Even the highest floor lay underground. According to Jahns, surviving records did not reach back before the uprising, while priests taught that the silo had always existed. Its history included unusually severe cycles of generational revolt and a deliberately instigated reset involving bombings and fighting. Donald believed surviving memories explained the failure of its resets; Anna Thurman sought to save it from termination.

A cleaner traveling beyond the hill and a failed cleaning accompanied renewed unrest. Fighting bloodied the staircase, and the resistance endured strict rationing. After Juliette returned, Lukas reported that more than half the silo had voted, and Juliette proposed opposition to the informed leaders controlling the silos. The structure bore extensive battle damage, but her excavation breached its thick concrete outer wall and revealed a dark void beyond. Marsha reported that the population had fallen below five thousand for the first time in thirty years. When Jimmy and the children arrived, they found steady lights, working machinery and crowds of adults.

Juliette announced that the silo would sever its external connections. Paul Thurman subsequently announced its shutdown, and a caller ordered it closed after questioning Lukas. Charlotte heard a disaster, although the radio repeaters continued to function, and understood that a handful of inhabitants had escaped over the hills to another silo. Juliette confirmed to Tom Higgins that their silo was gone, and Charlotte reported its shutdown. Former residents, including Juliette, now live in the Coastal Village; they outnumber the villagers who came from Elise’s silo.
