Charlotte Keene

Charlotte · Charla · Stan · charlie two-four

Charlotte, Donald’s sister and a former Air Force drone pilot, has escaped Silo One and now rushes to Juliette after the beach shooting.

Story so far

Charlotte served overseas as a drone pilot and admired Thurman. Donald recalls her distress at killing from the safety of a trailer, her PTSD diagnosis, and her difficult return to civilian life. Medication made her forgetful and caused a tic, according to him; he believes she resisted it because she wanted to retain the fear that made her feel human. Thurman arranges her surprise appearance at the convention, where she is frightened by the blasts. She helps Donald during the evacuation before being placed in cryogenic storage with the other women.

Donald finds and eventually wakes his sister after three centuries. Charlotte recovers her strength through eating, exercise, and drone work while living secretly in the barracks. She initially prefers leaving humanity’s fate to the computers, even after becoming convinced that only one silo is intended to survive. As Donald deteriorates, she fears he is dying and arranging her escape. Repeated drone failures leave their exploration uncertain; she hides under a tarp when intruders arrive and witnesses them beating him. Afterward she turns to the radio, hoping to learn his fate.

Disguised in loose red reactor coveralls marked Stan, with grease on her face and her hair under a cap, Charlotte ventures into the communications room to acquire a microphone. She recognizes Thurman as Donald’s attacker. Eren confronts her in the lift; she stabs him in the neck while he is strangling her, then is shot in the shoulder during her escape. Wounded, she hides in the drone lift and uses her Air Force call sign, charlie two-four, to contact channel seventeen. She eventually gives Juliette her full name, identifies Donald as her brother, denies that he destroyed Juliette’s silo, and reveals the plan to release only one silo. She believes the poisoned region is a contained cloud with a possible life beyond it.

When Darcy finds her, Charlotte admits killing Eren but says she did not want to. She offers him the drone evidence and Donald’s notes. A successful flight lands in real grass beyond the damaged region. Reunited with Donald, she refuses to abandon him and proposes sending him out on a lightened drone. His own plan instead sends her toward escape; she tries to force him to wear a suit, then realizes he intended the second suit for Darcy. Charlotte reaches the surface alone, unable to lower the lift for him, and follows the map Donald taped to her arm as the ground collapses behind her.

Charlotte reaches the other survivors in a silver suit and accepts Juliette’s invitation to travel toward the water. At the coast she fishes near Juliette and Solo. When Juliette is shot, Charlotte runs toward her.
