Story so far
Silo One supervises the other silos. Thousands of men were assigned shifts and oriented before being frozen; the women were put to sleep first. Its men work six-month shifts with no weekends, separated by decades of sleep, while women and children remain in long suspension. Troy began a shift here in 2110 and awoke again in 2212. The facility provides canned food and communal rooms showing repeated movies, but its corridors and central tiles have become worn through centuries of use.
In 2345 its staff awoke Donald Keene during the emergency caused by a cleaner disappearing over a hill. Surviving silo heads had not been told about the destruction of other facilities. Donald came to conclude that Silo One’s own population was intended to die, with its sleeping families retained as incentives for the working men. Its resources include sixteen storage levels besides the armory, and its lower shift storage holds thousands of closely packed pods.
Security later investigated a reported murder, while Juliette targeted the facility for an overland attack on its airlock. Darcy concluded that its thick concrete layers meant it too was prepared for demolition; Donald said lifts concealed that thickness and that its inhabitants were meant to die so no one would remember the old world. After Donald fires at the bomb, the ground above the facility cracks and collapses into a widening crater.
