Pater Coal is Emberus's level-101 Hobbledehoy high cleric and a temporary vessel through whom the dungeon AI secretly advances Geyrun's murder investigation.
Pater Coal is a proportionally small, white-haired humanlike noncombatant known for unusual patience among Hobbledehoys. He is in constant contact with Emberus and oversees the god's Club Vanquisher shrines.
He recognizes Carl's SlugPox, overrides Potsy's paperwork, suppresses the infection, and escorts Carl through the club. Although Carl may visit only one destination, Coal secretly diverts him to the High Temple before the healer.
During the foot-washing sacrament, his eyes become milky and he demonstrates awareness of crawler feeds that ordinary NPCs should lack. Carl identifies the dungeon AI speaking through him, but Coal says every role has limitations.
He directs Carl toward Apito's memorial crystal, Katia's crossbow, and Donut's oak bracelet, then completes the sacrament and grants the Martyr's Path.
A four-and-a-half-foot elderly humanlike cleric with long white hair and flowing red robes.
Pater Coal is Carl's Emberus escort, secret AI mouthpiece, quest guide, and boon officiant.
