Story so far

Odette says the mantises do more than administer dungeon AIs. They mine the intelligences, resurrect them, and physically or functionally graft them into engines attached to game planets.

These engines exist within the same infrastructure that extracts fuel elements from seeded biological overgrowth. Odette implies their operation is essential to a civilization-scale network and that dismantling the crawl without a replacement would have catastrophic consequences.

Carl receives no complete technical explanation because Donut's battle ends and his transfer interrupts the disclosure.
