The Cant's gentle, fumbling medic, who saved his crewmates again and again — and did not survive the Donnager.
Shed Garvey was the medic of the ice-hauler Canterbury, an amiable, talkative fugitive who had faked his medical records to escape a drug dealer who wanted him dead. Though no expert — he barely knew what he was doing, as his crewmates would later say — he repeatedly rose to the moment: buddy-breathing a hypoxic Alex back to life in vacuum, talking himself through his own panic, and, aboard the flagship Donnager as it was destroyed, sedating Alex to conserve the crew's air before turning back from the airlock to rejoin the others rather than save himself.
Shed did not survive the escape from the Donnager. Aboard the renamed gunship Rocinante, his absence is felt at once: when a wounded man needs patching, Amos takes up the medical kit with the grim admission "I'm not Shed, I don't know what I'm doing," and the bleak rejoinder comes — "neither did he." The crew's clumsy, kind-hearted healer is gone, mourned in the offhand way of people still running for their lives. [uncertain: the dialogue makes clear Shed is dead, but the exact manner and moment of his death are not shown on the page.]
Late medic of the Canterbury and the Donnager escape; killed in the destruction of the Martian flagship, his role on the Rocinante now falling to Amos.
