Story so far
Alex Kamal is the pilot of the gunship Rocinante and a former Martian Navy flyer, and in the Eros escape his pragmatism collides with the crew's loyalty. With Holden and Miller still trapped in the dying station, Alex argues hard for leaving — they'll all be killed if they linger, everyone he cares about is already dead or dying — but yields when Naomi holds the line to wait, standing by to fly on her word.
When Holden makes it back and it's time to run, the locked-down clamps won't release for any code in the book. Alex throws off the disguise that has chafed him all season: "You are a gunship and I am a Navy pilot, so to hell with this gas-hauler bullshit" — and tears the Rocinante free, blasting the crew and their survivors clear of the sealed, quarantined Eros. He flies them toward the reckoning ahead, the conspirators' station Thoth now in their sights.
