Dying ex-detective who guides the survivors out of Eros, saves a child, and finds a kind of peace with Julie's ghost.
Miller, the disgraced ex-detective who loved Julie Mao, becomes the survivors' guide through the Eros death-trap. A station rat who grew up with his old mentor Sematimba fishing chips out of pachinko machines to feed themselves, Miller knows the OPA's mech-shaft smuggling routes and reads the tunnel markers that lead toward the docks, leading Holden's crew through the maze even as the radiation kills them all by inches. Steeped in fatalism — "optimism is for assholes and Earthers; we Belters know the game's rigged" — he nonetheless keeps choosing decency: he stops to save a lost, terrified child, Setara Mali, carrying her toward safety and trying to pry her from a family that won't leave their doomed home.
As the experiment's full horror lands — a hundred thousand people infected as test subjects — Miller's pursuit of Julie reaches its strange end. Haunted by visions and her voice, and by a calm presence insisting she was "blessed," that she "touched the unknown and it touched her in return" and "is gonna save us all," Miller finds in finding her the meaning he'd been chasing: "thought if I could find Julie, I'd finally know something." "You did find her, Miller," Holden tells him. His old mentor Sematimba, who went to work for the killers running CPM, dies at the docks — shot by Naomi as the survivors fight their way to the ship. Reaching the Rocinante alive against the odds, the dying detective, who once weighed whether to be "an ass or a boot" and chose instead to keep faith with a lost cause, escapes Eros with the crew that has become his last.
Wears his trademark hat; visibly ravaged by acute radiation sickness.
