OPA true believer who boarded the Anubis to steal Earth's weapon, was infected, and died alone calling for help.
Juliette Andromeda Mao — Julie — was the runaway shipping heiress turned fierce OPA true believer, and this episode finally tells her story from the inside. A gifted racing pilot (of the ship Razorback) who had renounced her father's fortune, she led the OPA mission aboard her ship to intercept and seize the new bioweapon being built at Phoebe — a weapon, she insisted, that Belters needed to understand so it couldn't be used against them. "It's my father's money," she told her crew, and "that's his weapon on that ship." The intercept went catastrophically wrong: the target was the gunship Anubis, whose crew breached her vessel and took her captive as "a complication," while elsewhere the same conspiracy planted the false beacon on the Scopuli to lure the Canterbury to its death and turn Earth and Mars on each other — all to keep eyes off Eros.
Aboard the Anubis, Julie alone survived as the living protomolecule consumed everyone else. Her recordings as "Lionel Polanski" — the alias and OPA beacon she set — chart her desperation: the crew dead, something in the reactor that devoured them, herself fleeing by shuttle to Eros, hiding, leaving breadcrumbs, waiting and waiting for a rescue from Anderson Dawes that never came. Her final messages turn heartbreaking and childlike, begging her father not to sell the Razorback, longing to come home and make him proud. Miller and Holden find her body in room 22, infected and dead — and her father Jules-Pierre Mao, the man behind the whole scheme, learns of her death even as he harvests the protomolecule sample her corpse provides. An Earther who died for the Belt, Julie became both the weapon's victim and the key that unlocks the conspiracy.
Bears a prominent scar she chose not to fix; her body, infected by the protomolecule, is wreathed in the living substance in death.
