Large, furry, goblin-faced engineers of the Kapok district, famed for drink, accidental explosions, and grudges against the Ursine.
One of the few races that survived Scolopendra's nine-tier attack, bugbears are now among the most common races in the Kapok district of The Hunting Grounds, second only to the Ursine and Bush Elves. They sit on the same evolutionary tree as goblins and hobgoblins — ugly, mean, and rumored to have relations with toads — and like hobgoblins they are known for blowing things up, though their explosions tend to be involuntary. Engineers at heart, they spend their days building automatons, vehicles and other contraptions with varying degrees of success. Despite the name they are not actually bears, a point their neighbors and rivals the Ursine make at every opportunity.
Carl's rule of thumb: treat a bugbear like an enormous drunk guy at the end of a bar — he'll either want to fight you or be your buddy, and there's no predicting which. He met Goiter rebuilding the wrecked Small Bugbear Settlement, and found bugbears listed by name in the Town Rules of the Large Ursine Settlement, required to bathe in the river and register with the guards before entering, with soap provided.
Large, furry humanoids about human height but twice as bulky, with pointed ears and goblin-like faces, fur running orange-brown, brown or red.
A common Hunting Grounds race of engineers and bomb-makers, and potential allies against the hunters.
