Story so far
Jimmy’s mother abruptly took him out of class and led him downstairs toward the approaching noise. As a crowd fled upward, she urged him to keep descending; when they were separated, she told him to get to his father. On surveillance she was trapped against the railing, blood over her mouth and chin, still struggling downward.
After his father was shot, men dragged her into camera view and held her above his body. A man on the radio threatened to kill her unless Jimmy obeyed, but she shouted for him not to give them the code. After the third failed code attempt, another gunshot sounded, and Jimmy no longer heard her among the screams.
In the years remembered by Solo, his mother remained present in ordinary habits: tally marks for his good behavior, reused plastic around his school lunch and her urging him to blow out the birthday candle quickly. He imagined her waiting on his parents’ bed and then pictured a skeleton. His latest recollection gives meaning to her resistance on the stairs: he remembers her as knowing she did not want to follow those climbing toward their deaths.
