Story so far
Russ, Jimmy’s father, worked under Jerry as the IT shadow and second-in-command. Solo’s earlier account describes him as one of the few people who knew the hidden rooms: when fighting began, he gave his son the keys and created a diversion. The detailed account of the collapse shows Jimmy and his mother trying to reach him on level thirty-four. Russ shot Yani to free Jimmy, locked them inside the server room, and used a key and concealed lever to open access beneath the floor. He searched surveillance images for Jimmy’s mother and said someone was trying to shut down the silo after opening its airlock and claiming its gas was tainted.
Russ instructed Jimmy to admit only his parents and taught him to use the radio before going to find his mother. Identifying himself as Russ, he ordered Deputy Hines to stop traffic because people were being crushed, reported a breach above, and told Hines he was probably sheriff until the end. When captors brought Russ back outside the locked door, he warned Jimmy that opening it would get him killed. He fought back against their punches, but a security guard shot him; he died outside the door. In his contact with Silo One, he had answered its first call and then broken the connection.
Jimmy’s memories retain his father’s practical teaching: he made chores and tinkering into Projects, laid disassembled electronics out neatly for reassembly, built computers, and constructed Jimmy’s calculator from scratch. Jimmy remembered his assurance that the pantry held ten years of food, though later he could not recall whether that meant two people or four. Solo now remembers his father lighting the family candle for Jimmy’s birthday.
