The neighboring silo’s once densely active server room remains a refuge access point, though many machines have stopped over the years.
The room contains operating servers with blinking lights and is at least as large as Juliette’s generator room, much larger than the cafeteria. Juliette uses it for calls but finds the warm floor too noisy for sleep. A massive keypad-controlled steel door protects it, while a removable grate near the communications hub hides the ladder to the passage below. The grate originally locked automatically when replaced and could be released from beneath.
Accounts of Jimmy’s early isolation show outsiders trying codes at the steel door, with three failed attempts requiring a day’s wait. White vapor with a metallic taste enters through overhead vents; the lights and servers briefly shut down before power returns. Jimmy’s waste later fouls the room and attracts flies, with the machinery’s heat worsening the smell.
During a later outage, the servers keep producing heat while the keypad stops blinking and the steel door stands partly open. Over the years, many machines cease running, possibly because of the heat.
