The rogue, self-freed SecUnit, traveling alone toward Milu to gather evidence against GrayCris for Dr. Mensah.
The construct that calls itself Murderbot is a self-hacked SecUnit that long ago freed itself from its governor module and now moves through the Corporation Rim disguised as an augmented-human security consultant. Having left RaviHyral after killing to protect a group of technologists, it books passage on a grim bot-driven passenger transport where it foolishly lists itself as a security consultant under the name 'Rin' and ends up refereeing endless fights among twenty-year contract laborers bound for a labor installation. It genuinely misses ART, and even the young clients it left behind.
Killing time in a rest cubicle at a crowded transit hub, it catches a newsburst interview with Dr. Mensah, who looks chronically exhausted, and hears her vow to push the Preservation Council to investigate GrayCris's abandoned terraforming project at Milu. Murderbot reasons that Milu was likely a cover for illegal alien-remnant recovery, and that proof of it could redirect the whole investigation, clear the story of the 'stray SecUnit,' and let Mensah go safely home. It resolves to slip aboard a supply ship at HaveRatton Station, reach Milu unseen, harvest whatever data GrayCris left behind, and send it to her.
Its body has been reconfigured so scans no longer read it as a SecUnit, and it has coded itself human-like movements and breathing to help it pass.
A lean, humanized construct with a plain generic human face and a concealed neck dataport, its limbs slightly shortened and body hair grown in from ART's earlier reconfiguration, dressed in dark travel clothes with a knapsack.
Protagonist and first-person narrator; a free SecUnit undertaking a self-chosen mission to expose GrayCris and protect Dr. Mensah.
